Northern Illinois University Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program is in the forefront of providing defibrillators or AED's (Automatic External Defibrillator) campus wide. Currently there are 22 units in various locations at the DeKalb campus. In addition, AED's are located at Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford campuses and Lorado Taft. Maintenance of these units are coordinated by the Environmental Health and Safety.
In addition to having AED's on campus, several employees have been trained in CPR and the use of an AED.
CPR and First Aid courses are provided by American Heart Association certified instructor.
The Healthcare Provider course includes adult, child and infant CPR and use of an AED (defibrillator). The initial class is generally four hours long. Refresher classes are two hours long.
The Basic Life Support CPR class provided on campus includes adult CPR and use of an AED (defibrillator) . The class is generally three hours long. The only items needed are a TV/VCR and suitable room.
The First Aid course includes first response for burns, cuts, and various accidents. This class is generally four hours long, requires a TV/VCR and suitable room.
CPR and First Aid certifications are valid for two years.
